1. Is PMDD caused by a hormone imbalance?

Contrary to popular belief, most women with PMDD do not have "abnormal" hormone levels. Blood tests often show oestrogen and progesterone within the standard reference ranges. Instead, PMDD is caused by a neurological sensitivity to the natural fluctuations of these hormones. The brain’s neurotransmitters (like GABA and Serotonin) struggle to adapt to the hormonal shifts after ovulation, triggering the severe emotional symptoms.

 

2. How is PMDD different from standard PMS?

While PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome) can cause mild irritability, bloating, and fatigue, it generally doesn't prevent you from functioning in your daily life. PMDD is debilitating.
