ADHD & Neurodivergence

ADHD Support Through a Neuroaffirming Naturopathic Approach

ADHD is not something that needs to be “fixed” or cured.

ADHD is a neurotype. A naturally different way the brain is wired. A neuroaffirming approach recognises that ADHD brains are not broken, but they can become significantly more overwhelmed when other stressors, deficiencies, inflammation or hormonal changes are present.

My focus is not on trying to make someone neurotypical. The goal is to identify and support the underlying factors that may be worsening ADHD symptoms such as:

  • brain fog

  • poor concentration

  • fatigue

  • overwhelm

  • emotional dysregulation

  • anxiety

  • sleep issues

  • low motivation

  • burnout

Many people with ADHD notice their symptoms become dramatically worse during periods of stress, hormonal change, gut dysfunction or nutrient depletion. Supporting these areas can help improve daily function, emotional resilience, focus and nervous system regulation.

Nutrient Deficiencies Linked to ADHD Symptoms

Nutrient deficiencies are common contributors to worsening ADHD symptoms.

Low levels of:

  • iron

  • magnesium

  • zinc

  • omega-3 fatty acids

  • B vitamins

  • amino acids

can affect dopamine production, nervous system regulation and energy levels.

Iron is particularly important because it is required for dopamine production — a key neurotransmitter involved in:

  • attention

  • focus

  • motivation

  • executive functioning

Low ferritin levels may contribute to:

  • increased ADHD symptom severity

  • fatigue

  • restless sleep

  • poor concentration

  • low motivation

Correcting nutrient deficiencies can significantly improve overall brain and nervous system function.

Yes! The gut-brain connection plays a major role in ADHD symptoms.

The gut helps regulate inflammation, neurotransmitter production, immune activity and nervous system signalling. Issues such as:

  • SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)

  • parasites

  • fungal overgrowth

  • low beneficial bacteria

  • increased intestinal permeability, otherwise known as leaky gut

can all contribute to increased inflammation and neurotransmitter disruption.

This may worsen symptoms including:

  • brain fog

  • fatigue

  • anxiety

  • poor focus

  • low mood

  • sleep disturbances

  • emotional reactivity

Supporting gut health can help improve both digestive symptoms and cognitive function in many ADHDers.

Can Gut Health Affect ADHD Symptoms?

ADHD, Stress & Nervous System Burnout

Many adults with ADHD have spent years masking symptoms, over-functioning, people pleasing or living in chronic stress.

Over time this can lead to nervous system dysregulation and burnout.

Burnout in neurodivergence may present as:

  • exhaustion

  • brain fog

  • reduced motivation

  • emotional sensitivity

  • shutdown

  • poor memory

  • increased overwhelm

  • reduced tolerance to stimulation

Supporting nervous system regulation is often a critical part of improving ADHD symptom management.

This may include:

  • improving sleep quality

  • reducing inflammation

  • nervous system support

  • stress management

  • movement and exercise

  • reducing overstimulation

  • improving recovery capacity

Perimenopause Ramping Up ADHD Symptoms

One of the biggest patterns I see in clinic is women reaching their late 30s and 40s feeling like their ADHD has suddenly become worse overnight. Many women who previously managed reasonably well start experiencing: increased brain fog forgetfulness overwhelm emotional sensitivity anxiety reduced stress tolerance sleep disruption low motivation difficulty focusing or completing tasks increased sensory overload For some women, this is actually the stage where they first realise they may have ADHD. The reason this happens largely comes down to hormones — particularly the decline and fluctuation of oestrogen during perimenopause. Oestrogen plays a major role in supporting dopamine production and signalling in the brain. Dopamine is one of the key neurotransmitters involved in focus, motivation, executive function, emotional regulation and attention. When oestrogen begins fluctuating and declining during perimenopause, dopamine activity can become less stable too. This is why many women notice: ADHD medications may suddenly feel less effective their ability to cope with stress reduces masking becomes harder burnout symptoms intensify emotional regulation becomes more difficult sleep and anxiety worsen At the same time, perimenopause is often occurring during an already demanding life stage — careers, parenting, caring for ageing parents, relationship stress and years of accumulated nervous system depletion can all compound symptoms further. What Can Help? A neuroaffirming, holistic approach during perimenopause focuses on supporting both hormones and the nervous system, rather than blaming the person for “not coping.” Support may include: stabilising blood sugar and increasing protein intake supporting sleep quality and nervous system regulation correcting nutrient deficiencies such as iron, magnesium and B vitamins reducing inflammation supporting gut health and detoxification pathways using evidence-based herbal and nutritional medicine to support hormone balance reviewing stress load, recovery time and burnout patterns working collaboratively alongside ADHD medication support where appropriate Perimenopause can absolutely amplify ADHD symptoms — but understanding why this is happening can often bring enormous relief and validation for women who have spent years feeling like they are suddenly “failing.” Your brain hasn’t suddenly broken. Your hormonal environment has changed, and your nervous system now needs a different level of support.

Reclaim Your Energy. Reclaim Your Focus. Reclaim Your Clarity!

Lydia Cotter is a Clinical Naturopath with over 12 years of experience supporting women with ADHD, AuDHD, autism, hormone imbalances, burnout and nervous system dysregulation, particularly during perimenopause and the hormonal transitions of their late 30s and 40s.

Using a science-based, neuroaffirming and evidence-informed approach, Lydia combines naturopathy, nutrition, herbal medicine and pathology analysis to uncover the underlying drivers contributing to fatigue, brain fog, worsened PMDD, anxiety, inflammation, gut issues and hormone-related symptoms.

Lydia's approach focuses on supporting the body, brain and nervous system as a whole, helping women feel calmer, more resilient and better supported through ADHD, perimenopause, chronic stress and burnout recovery.

Supporting Dopamine, Energy & Focus

Blood sugar instability is one of the biggest contributors to:

  • Energy crashes

  • Poor focus and concentration

  • Irritability

  • Anxiety

  • Emotional dysregulation

  • Afternoon burnout

This is particularly important in ADHD and neurodivergence, where the brain already has a higher demand for dopamine, stable energy and nervous system regulation.

A nuerodivergent-friendly diet focuses on:

  • Increasing protein intake

  • Balancing blood sugar

  • Supporting regular meals

  • Including healthy fats and fibre

  • Reducing excessive processed sugar and ultra-processed foods

Stabilising blood sugar can help support:

  • More consistent energy

  • Improved concentration

  • Reduced cravings

  • Better mood regulation

  • Nervous system resilience

For some people, food intolerances, histamine issues or inflammatory foods may also contribute to increased nervous system activation, gut symptoms and worsening ADHD-related symptoms.

How Naturopaths Support ADHD and Neurodivergence

A holistic naturopathic approach focuses on supporting the nervous system, brain and body as a whole — particularly during periods of stress, burnout, hormonal change and overwhelm.

Support may include:

  • Nervous system regulation

  • Improving sleep quality and recovery

  • Supporting gut health and the gut–brain connection

  • Reducing inflammation and neuroinflammation

  • Stabilising blood sugar and energy levels

  • Increasing protein and key nutrient intake

  • Correcting iron and nutrient deficiencies

  • Supporting hormones during perimenopause and PMDD

  • Stress management and burnout recovery strategies

The goal is not to “fix” ADHD or neurodivergence, but to support the body and brain, so symptoms feel more manageable, resilience improves and daily life feels less overwhelming.

Environmental Triggers, Inflammation & Cognitive Function

Environmental and inflammatory stressors can also affect brain function, mood and nervous system regulation.

Factors such as:

  • Mould exposure

  • Heavy metals

  • Chronic infections

  • Histamine and mast cell activation

  • Ongoing inflammation

may contribute to:

  • Brain fog

  • Fatigue

  • Increased sensory sensitivity

  • Sleep disruption

  • Anxiety

  • Cognitive overwhelm.

For some individuals, reducing inflammatory load and supporting detoxification pathways can lead to significant improvements in energy, mental clarity and overall wellbeing.

A holistic naturopathic approach looks at the bigger picture, supporting not only hormones and neurotransmitters, but also the gut, immune system, inflammation and environmental factors that may be contributing to symptoms.
