During winter our immune systems are under more stress to ward off the multitude of pathogens we are exposed to on a daily basis.
Here’s my go to immune superchargers to turn you into a winter warrior and keep those pesky bugs at bay:
Herb overload: thyme, rosemary, sage and oregano are brilliant as they are super high in antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. Pop a few springs of one or all of them in your salads, soups, scrambled eggs, stir-fries or savoury smoothies.
Eat lots & lots of garlic & onion: especially raw onion and garlic as they have higher anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and antimicrobial actions that assist in killing off any nasty bugs attacking your immunity.
Add spices: ginger, cardamom, turmeric, cayenne or chili are warming spices that give your immune system a little zing. They have anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and antibacterial actions to warn off bugs and nasty's hanging around.
Drink plenty of water: plenty = 1.5L-2L will hydrate you to ensure adequate amounts of white blood cells, immune cells and nutrients circulate to all tissues in your body for energy, erradiation of toxins and to fight off villanous vermins (AKA bacteria, parasites & viruses). Remember for every coffee of caffeinated tea you drink, you deplete your water intake by about 1 glass. So add on an extra glass for every cuppa or coffee.
Have a natural immune kit on hand: antibiotics should only be used when they really really REALLY need to be, I’m not talking about a cold, or a cough either. Herbal and natural medicines like good quality echinacea, olive leaf extract, goldenseal, zinc, and aged garlic extracts are brilliant options to supercharge your immunity.
